Welcome 5th graders!!
I am so excited to start the new year together! I have lots of fun and exciting things plans for us this year. I am looking forward to meeting you and your parents at Meet the Teacher on June, 25th from 6:00-7:30.

Human Growth and Development: On a sheet of paper, write down 5 positive ways you can deal with stress and/or negative emotions. On the back of your paper, talk to your parent about the possibility of an increase in arguments due to puberty. With your parent, create a plan for how you will work together when you and your parent have a disagreement. Your parent must sign the agreement.

Level 4 Opportunities/Quarter 2
Language Arts- Students can apply their understanding of different ways to organize informational text by: Writing a paragraph of information using *cause/effect signal words *sequence signal words *problem/solution
Math: Students can apply their understanding of the different representations of numbers by: Taking a number less than one and... -writing several different representations of that number (fraction, decimal, percent, equivilant fraction and decimal) and explaining thier work.
Science: Students can apply their understanding of unbalanced forces by -Taking a picture of unblanced forces in thier home and using science vocabulary, explain how they know that unbalanced forces are at work. -Finding an example at home where more force needs to be exerted on an object to make it move than another object. Using science vocabulary, the student should explain why this is true. -Demonstrate a way to increase and decrease friction on an object. Prove how you know the object's frictoin has been increased/decreased. -Demonstrate 3 examples of potential and kinentic energy. Prove how you know this. -Create 3 examples of balanced and unbalanced forces. Prove how you know this. -Create a simple machine. Prove how it makes a job easier.

My name is Shannon McGarry and this is my 10th year teaching. I am proud to be apart of the Banks Road Blazers.
I've been married for 12 years to my wonderful husband Rob and have a 2 year old son, James and a newborn daughter, Olivia. I moved to North Carolina 6 years ago from sunny South Florida. In my spare time, I enjoy reading a good book on my deck and relaxing with family and friends.

Language Arts: -Create a "how to" book explaining before reading strategies for narrative text. Make sure to demonstrate each skill and explain how do do it. The book must be colored and neat. -When making a prediction about narrative text, prove/elaborate on what makes you think pillow each element (character, setting, problem, and solution) will be in the text. -Create a "how to" book explaining during and fix-up strateties for narrative text. The book must be colored and neat. -Create a video demonstrating how to do something (how make a sandwich, how to do a skateboard trick, etc..). Include expository text features in your video (sub headings) that break up the task into steps. Math: 1. Take an objective we have been learning (multistep problems, algebraic chains, factor puzzles, etc..) and... -create at least 5 of your own questions Make sure to solve AND explain how you solved the question. 2. Create a booklet explaining how to use a protractor to measure angles. Add pictures from your home that show yourself measuring objects and determining the angle. 3. Make a sandwhich. Cut the sandwich with a diagnal line. Then find the area and the perimeter of one of the slices of your sandwich. Include pictures and/or photographs. Show your work. 4. Find common objects in your home and determine their shape (rectangle, right triangle, parallelogram). Then find their the area and perimeter. Take pictures and show your work.
